BOSTON -- One ball fell between two outfielders. Another took a bad hop off the Green Monster standings. One batter reached safely on a dropped third strike and another when the pitcher was slow to cover first.By the time it was over, the Boston Red Sox had scored five runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of Tampa Bay's bad luck and bad defense to overcome an early deficit and beat the Rays 12-2 on Friday in Game 1 of the AL division series.

Red Sox went 8-17 with RISP against the Rays. The only other time the Red Sox had more hits with RISP in a postseason game was in Game 4 of 1999 ALDS vs Indians (12 hits).
The Red Sox scored 12 runs today without hitting a home run. It's the most runs the Red Sox have ever scored in a postseason game without a homer. The Red Sox are the first team with at least 12 runs without hitting a home run in a postseason game since the Diamondbacks in the 2001 World Series against the Yankees (Game 6).[+]
At Least 12 Runs Without HR - MLB Postseason Last 50 Years
All nine Red Sox starters had at least one hit and at least one run scored in Game 1. They're just the third team in postseason history to do that, the others being the 1936 Yankees (WS game 2 vs Giants) and the 1934 Cardinals (WS Game 7 vs Tigers). Other teams (most recently the 2001 Indians) have had nine players do it in a game, but not all nine were starters.
