U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois
Gavin Floyd has looked good in winning three straight starts, including a rare solid outing at home.
A.J. Burnett, meanwhile, has never won a start in August with the New York Yankees. These right-handers meet Wednesday night at U.S. Cellular Field when the Chicago White Sox try to end a four-game slide and snap the Yankees' five-game win streak. The pitching matchup for this contest could be in favor of Chicago (52-56) since Floyd (9-9, 3.96 ERA) has posted a 0.81 ERA in three outings since the All-Star break. He allowed one run and three hits in seven innings in Friday's 3-1 win over Boston."(He's) throwing a lot more pitches inside," catcher A.J. Pierzynski told the White Sox's official website. "He's always had the ability to do it, he's just doing it now and getting strikes."Floyd won for the first time in his last four starts at home, where he has a 5.55 ERA this year. He's 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA in five career starts against New York (66-42), striking out a season-high 10 over eight innings to earn a 3-2 road win April 26.His counterpart, Burnett (8-9, 4.23), went 0-3 with a 4.83 ERA in five July outings. Things may not get any easier, since he's 0-8 with a 6.82 ERA in 11 starts in August in 2009 and 2010 for New York.He struck out a season-high 10 and gave up four runs over eight innings Friday in a 4-2 home loss to Baltimore."I gave all I could out there," Burnett said. "Where I'm at now, I feel fine. I can't wait to pitch the next game."Burnett has lost at U.S. Cellular Field in August each of the last two years with disastrous results. He's given up 16 runs over eight innings and failed to get through the fifth inning either time.He could be facing the White Sox at the right time. Chicago has scored seven runs during this losing streak after Phil Hughes pitched six innings in Tuesday's 6-0 win for New York, which was called after 6 1/2 innings due to rain. The White Sox continue to play without Paul Konerko, who will likely miss a third straight game as he recovers from a bruised left calf. Konerko leads the team with 25 homers and 76 RBIs.Chicago has fallen 5 1/2 games behind first-place Detroit in the AL Central."I'm not going to give up. I'm not going to give in," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I'm not a loser."The Yankees remained one game behind Boston in the East as Mark Teixeira set a major league record by homering from both sides of the plate in a single game for the 12th time."Two home runs, one from each side, it's not easy," said Teixeira, who is 1 for 9 with four strikeouts against Floyd.New York captain Derek Jeter returned after missing a game with a bruised middle finger and had two hits and scored two runs. The Yankees' bullpen wasn't needed Tuesday, but it has posted an AL-best 3.07 ERA, including 12 2/3 straight scoreless innings on the road.Copyright by STATS LLC and The Associated Press
