Yankee Stadium, New York, NY
The New York Yankees usually beat the Baltimore Orioles.
With Brian Matusz set to take the mound for Baltimore, that doesn't appear likely to change Tuesday night.Matusz seeks to avoid matching the longest losing streak for a pitcher in Orioles history when he faces the Yankees in the Bronx. The Orioles (14-9) are 14-5 against all other opponents, but fell to 0-4 on the season versus New York (13-9) after dropping Monday's series opener 2-1. The Yankees improved to 43-15 against Baltimore since 2009, including a 22-6 mark at home. Those marks appear likely to grow more lopsided with Matusz (0-3, 5.66 ERA) getting the ball. The left-hander has lost 12 straight decisions, one shy of the Orioles record set by Mike Boddicker from Aug. 1987-May 1998.It's also the longest losing streak in the majors since Jo-Jo Reyes dropped 13 straight decisions from June 23, 2008-May 25, 2011, with the final defeat coming at Yankee Stadium while he was pitching for Toronto.Matusz is 0-12 with a 10.47 ERA in 14 starts since beating Oakland last June 6. He's 0-2 in three starts versus the Yankees in that stretch, allowing 15 runs in 10 2/3 innings. He's 2-5 with a 5.10 ERA in eight career starts versus the Yankees.Matusz, though, is coming off his best outing since he skid began. He yielded two unearned runs in six innings of Thursday's 5-2 victory over Toronto, but did not get a decision"This year, I've felt good out there in multiple outings," said Matusz, who had surrendered four runs or more in every other start of his winless drought. "(Thursday) I was able to be consistent and really find myself getting into a groove and putting everything together, and I'm just not trying to do too much but being able to hit locations and make good pitches."Derek Jeter is 11 for 22 with five doubles off Matusz, while Robinson Cano is 9 for 22 with two homers.Jeter, batting a team-high .389, is 8 for 18 with a pair of doubles, a homer and three RBIs against the Orioles this year. The Yankees will give the ball to Phil Hughes (1-3, 7.88), who is well-rested due to his own ineffectiveness. The right-hander was lifted with two outs in the third inning of Wednesday's 7-3 loss at Texas after surrendering four runs and five hits and hitting two batters. He's given up at least four runs in each of his last three starts, and has pitched just 16 innings in four outings this season."We believe he can do it and I know he believes he can do, but right now sometimes the ball runs back a little bit, he leaves the curveball up a little bit. Cutter sometimes isn't getting where he wants it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It is frustrating, but you have to keep working at it."Hughes is 3-0 with a 3.86 ERA in eight career home appearances versus Baltimore.Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis, who was 1 for 4 on Monday, is 10 for 29 with three doubles and one homer off Hughes. He is also batting .343 with two homers and seven RBIs in his last nine games at Yankee Stadium.Copyright by STATS LLC and The Associated Press
