It didn't take long for the Chicago Cubs to revert to their light-hitting ways following a rare offensive outburst.

Matt Garza is all too familiar with the lack of run support, though he hasn't done much to help his own cause lately.

The right-hander will oppose the Milwaukee Brewers' Randy Wolf in a matchup of starters seeking their first victory in more than a month Thursday when the NL Central rivals complete their three-game series at Miller Park.

The Cubs (19-37) lost for the fifth time in six games with Wednesday's 8-0 loss to Milwaukee, totaling six runs in those defeats. Their only sign of offensive life came in Tuesday's 10-0 victory in the series opener.

Chicago matched a season low with three hits Wednesday and struck out 15 times against Zack Greinke and two relievers. The club's 201 total runs rank 27th in the majors.

"We really didn't put together any good swings or anything," manager Dale Sveum said. "(Greinke) kept the ball down and away. His breaking ball was down. We obviously didn't cover the outer half of the plate."

The Cubs' offense hasn't done a great job of supporting Garza (2-4, 4.10 ERA), either.

Since he allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings to beat Philadelphia on April 29 -- then missed his next start with a virus -- Garza has gotten three total runs of support in 25 2/3 innings over five starts. The 1.05 average per nine innings is the lowest in the majors during that span.

Garza is 0-3 with a 5.96 ERA in that stretch, with the Cubs losing all five games. He allowed two runs in six innings of a 2-1 defeat at San Francisco on Saturday.

With the Cubs rebuilding under Theo Epstein, there's speculation they may try to move Garza before the July 31 trade deadline.

"I've said before, five days is the farthest I look," Garza told the team's official website. "I can't control anything I don't know will happen or what might happen."

Garza allowed three hits in 8 2/3 innings of an 8-0 home win over the Brewers on April 12, then gave up one run in five innings while walking five during the Cubs' 8-7, 13-inning loss May 11 at Miller Park.

Wolf pitched six scoreless innings in that game, and he'll oppose Garza again seeking his first win since beating San Diego on April 30.

Wolf (2-5, 6.05) allowed six runs in six innings of an 8-2 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday, dropping to 0-3 with a 5.45 ERA in his last six starts. The veteran left-hander is 1-4 with a 3.65 ERA in his last seven outings versus the Cubs.

The Brewers (25-31) had lost three of four prior to Wednesday's win. Taylor Green hit his first major league homer -- a pinch-hit three-run shot in the eighth -- and Norichika Aoki went 3 for 4.

Ryan Braun, hitting only .205 in his last 12 games while battling injuries, had an RBI double.

"That's been the challenge the entire time -- sustaining good baseball," Braun told the team's official website. "Getting contributions in all facets of the game on the same day. We've had plenty of glimpses, flashes, where we've played really well."

The Brewers, who may get Aramis Ramirez back in the lineup Thursday, have won 11 of 13 at home against the third baseman's former team.
