The last time the San Diego Padres sent Jason Marquis to the mound, Zack Greinke was starting for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After the ballyhooed incident that cost the Dodgers one of their best pitchers for eight weeks, Chris Capuano is slated to get the call opposite Marquis in the middle game of this series between the NL West rivals Tuesday night.

Marquis (0-1, 3.27 ERA) gave up two runs in the opening inning against Los Angeles (7-6) on Thursday before tossing four scoreless and leaving while not getting a decision in a 3-2 defeat. An inning after his exit, Greinke would leave under stranger circumstances.

The right-hander plunked Carlos Quentin, touching off a bench-clearing brawl that resulted in a broken left collarbone for the 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner.

Quentin was suspended eight games, but dropped his appeal and will miss this entire series, which started without incident as San Diego (3-10) beat Los Angeles 6-3 on Monday.

"I don't think there was anything brewing before this game," Padres manager Bud Black said. "We put this behind us. A solid baseball game was played by both sides."

The Dodgers will now turn to Capuano after the veteran left-hander made both of his appearances this season out of the bullpen, and coincidentally against San Diego, including one as Greinke's immediate replacement.

He has held the Padres to two hits with four strikeouts in 2 2/3 scoreless innings, and he's 5-4 with a 3.34 ERA in 14 career games -- 11 starts -- against them.

"Obviously, he's not going to throw 120 (pitches)," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "But he's been a guy who's made the most of the situation with his routine and jumping right in and staying on top of things and keeping sharp, and both times it showed."

It also seems Capuano isn't going to stir up emotions from last week's brawl.

"Donnie said it best, our focus is on winning ballgames," he said. "That's the best revenge. We're not out here trying to start fights or hurt anyone. Everyone understands the game, we want to be professionals."

Matt Kemp was at the center of the brawl and confronted Quentin after the game, but he's been much more effective against the Padres at the plate. The center fielder is hitting .390 over his last 19 meetings with them after getting two hits Monday.

Kemp, though, is 3 for 20 with six strikeouts against Marquis, who has dropped three of his last four road starts against Los Angeles behind a 4.95 ERA.

Marquis will have to contend with Carl Crawford, who is 8 for 18 with a triple, a homer, two RBIs and five runs in four season meetings with San Diego.

Chase Headley is nearing a return to the Padres after starting the season on the disabled list due to a broken left thumb. The third baseman was San Diego's biggest threat at the plate last year, hitting .286 with career highs of 31 homers and 115 RBIs.

"He's close (to returning)," Black told the team's official website. "We don't know when. He's got to feel comfortable where he is."

Headley surely feels comfortable at Chavez Ravine, where he's a career .333 hitter in 38 visits. He's also 4 for 10 with a homer off Capuano.
