Yankees-Mariners Preview

The last time Andy Pettitte faced the Seattle Mariners, he left early due to an injury that would force him to miss multiple starts.

He hopes this outing turns out better as the New York Yankees look to bounce back from their first loss in five games against the host Mariners on Saturday.

Pettitte (4-3, 4.17 ERA) suffered a strained left trapezius muscle after allowing two runs and walking three in 4 2/3 innings of a 3-2 loss to Seattle on May 16.

He came off the 15-day disabled list Monday but allowed four runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings before the Yankees beat Cleveland 7-4. He's pitched five innings or fewer in four of his last five starts, going 1-2 with a 6.31 ERA in that stretch.

"I felt like maybe I ran out of gas a little bit," Pettitte said after his latest outing.

The veteran left-hander is 2-5 with a 3.63 ERA in eight career regular-season starts at Safeco Field, though he hasn't pitched there since 2010. He'll look to help get New York (35-26) back in the win column after having its four-game winning streak snapped with Friday's 4-1 loss to Seattle.

The Yankees have scored in only two innings over the first two of this four-game series, getting each run during Thursday's 6-1 win in the third. Travis Hafner's RBI groundout in the first accounted for the only run Friday.

Robinson Cano went hitless and is 3 for 26 over his last eight games for New York, which scored 23 runs during its winning streak.

Joe Saunders will oppose Pettitte looking to continue his run of solid outings.

Saunders (4-5, 5.20) gave up one run in seven innings of Seattle's 3-2, 10-inning loss to San Diego on May 29 before allowing one run in 6 1/3 frames of a 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday.

He had gone 2-4 with a 7.81 ERA in his previous seven starts.

"It was nice to go out there against a good-hitting club and get a 'W,'" Saunders said.

The left-hander has pitched well against the Yankees the last five times he's faced them. He's 2-1 with a 3.03 ERA in those starts, including Games 2 and 6 of the 2009 ALCS while with the Los Angeles Angels and Game 4 of last season's division series pitching for Baltimore.

Seattle (27-35) got two-out, two-run singles in the fourth from Brendan Ryan and Jason Bay on Friday to account for the team's offense. The hits were a rare occurrence as the Mariners entered the contest last in the AL hitting .221 with runners in scoring position.

Kyle Seager is hitting .356 during an 11-game hitting streak he extended with a single in the seventh.

Closer Tom Wilhelmsen has saved three straight opportunities after giving up three runs in a 5-4 loss to Minnesota on May 1.

"It was big for him, it was big for me, for all of us, because that's a significant step," manager Eric Wedge said of Wilhelmsen.

Seattle had lost six of the previous eight home meetings with the Yankees prior to Friday's win.
