    Padres-Rockies Preview

Kyle Blanks' hitting streak has helped the San Diego Padres' offense heat up as the team's road trip comes to a close.

Given how poorly Clayton Richard has pitched during his recent starts, he could use all the help he can get.

Richard seeks his first win as a starter while helping guide San Diego to a fourth victory in five tries as it faces the host Colorado Rockies in the finale of this four-game series Sunday.

Blanks is hitting .435 with three homers and seven RBIs during a six-game hitting streak, which he extended by going 2 for 4 with a two-run homer in the fourth inning of Saturday's 4-2 victory.

    He's 6 for 11 in the series and also hit a two-run shot in Friday's 10-9, 10-inning defeat.

"Getting good pitches to hit. Haven't been missing too many," Blanks said of his recent success. "That's typically how anyone gets quite a few hits."

The Padres (29-33) have scored 32 runs over their last five after beginning their seven-game road trip with a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. They may need to continue scoring at that pace if Richard struggles again.

Richard (1-5, 8.38 ERA) had lost four consecutive starts before picking up a 5-4 win over Toronto out of the bullpen in a 17-inning marathon May 31. He didn't fare well as a starter Tuesday, though, allowing six runs in 4 1/3 innings of San Diego's 9-7 loss to the Dodgers.

He has a dismal 11.39 ERA over his last five starts, pitching fewer than six innings four times.

"It's about missing spots," manager Bud Black said. "I think the velocity is fine but the location is not good with the fastball. I think we need to mix in (more) off-speed pitches."

Prior to his current rough stretch, the left-hander had his best start of the season, giving up two hits in six scoreless innings against Colorado before the Padres fell 2-1. Richard had gone 1/3 with a 7.29 ERA in his previous six starts versus the Rockies.

Colorado (33-30), though, went 0 for 15 with runners in scoring position during Saturday's loss as Carlos Gonzalez went hitless. He's 2 for 13 since hitting three homers in Wednesday's 12-4 win over Cincinnati.

The Rockies scored one run on an error and the other on a groundout from Tyler Colvin, who was called up from Triple-A earlier in the day because Michael Cuddyer missed his second straight game with sore ribs and could be headed back to the disabled list.

"You can't expect to win when you leave so many guys on base," Gonzalez said. "(Saturday) was just a bad game. You have to forget about it."

Colorado will look to get back on track as Juan Nicasio tries to win for the first time in four outings.

Nicasio (4-2, 4.76) has a 5.63 ERA over his last three starts after allowing three runs in six innings of Colorado's 5-4 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday.

The right-hander has been solid in three career starts versus the Padres, though, going 2-0 with a 3.26 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.

Chase Headley, however, has been a very tough matchup for Nicasio, with the Padres third baseman going 6 for 9 with two homers.

Colorado had won six straight meetings with San Diego before dropping two in this series.
