The Chicago White Sox are hoping to endure just two more games with slugger Jose Abreu out of the lineup, and right-hander Andre Rienzo will try to help in the next one by starting another win streak.

Rienzo will seek to bounce back from his first loss Saturday against the San Diego Padres.

Abreu remains on schedule to return from an ailing left ankle in Monday's series opener at the Los Angeles Dodgers and the White Sox (28-28) have gone 7-5 without their star rookie, who remains among the major league leaders with 15 home runs.

Chicago could have used Abreu as it produced just four hits in Friday's series opener, a 4-1 loss that snapped a three-game win streak.

Rienzo (4-1, 3.95 ERA) is hoping to help his club rebound while continuing to lower his ERA. He has given up two earned runs in each of his last three starts but was charged with three unearned runs in a 7-1 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday.

Rienzo committed one of Chicago's two errors in the second inning on a pickoff attempt and gave up another run in the fourth on a wild pitch.

He will face a San Diego team that just missed its season-high fourth consecutive game with 10 or more hits Friday. The Padres (25-30) finished with nine, and Yonder Alonso went 3 for 4 with a two-run homer.

San Diego is batting .288 in its last four games after hitting .221 in its first 51. It has alternated wins and losses in its last seven, with Alonso going 9 for 21 (.429) with three homers.

"He's slowly getting there, along with a few other guys," manager Bud Black told the team's official website.

While they'll have to wait for Abreu, the White Sox are hoping captain Paul Konerko can return from an ailing back Saturday. He has missed the past two games and has played once in the past four.

Konerko said before Friday's loss that he was available if needed but was not used.

"You don't want to throw somebody in there that's not quite sure, and I wasn't sure," Konerko said. "It is what it is. I have to deal with this a lot."

If he's back in the lineup, Konerko will face Tyson Ross (5-4, 2.97), who is seeking to rebound from one of his most difficult outings of the season. The right-hander was charged with five runs and nine hits over five innings Monday in Arizona but did not get a decision in a 7-5 loss.

Ross was 3-1 with a 2.16 ERA in his previous five starts and had allowed one earned run in each of his prior four.

Ross won his only start against the White Sox on May 14, 2011, while with Oakland. Konerko hit a two-run homer off him in that 6-2 defeat and is the only Chicago player to get more than one hit against Ross, going 2 for 4.

No San Diego hitter has faced Rienzo.
