Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Vladimir Guerrero doesn't have to hit home runs to make things happen for the Los Angeles Angels.
But trotting around the bases after putting balls over the wall is much less painful. The AL MVP sustained a bruise on his right knee when he was hit by a throw while stealing third base Tuesday night, but then scored two more times before coming out of the Angels' 13-8 win at Texas on Tuesday night."I tried to steal third, being aggressive," Guerrero said. "I'm a little sore right now, but I don't expect to miss any time."Guerrero was hurt when he took off on his own, starting a double steal in the third inning. The throw by catcher Rod Barajas hit his knee, but he scampered home for a 4-1 lead."He got a little bruised up," manager Mike Scioscia said. "It was a big play at the time."Guerrero stayed in another inning, and got another at-bat in the Angels' three-run fourth. He felt some throbbing in his leg that at-bat, and didn't return to right field in the bottom of the inning."We decided it's better to just take it easy now and put some ice on it," said Guerrero, who finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored. "The earlier we got ice on it the better. As the game progressed, and I watched the guys play, it felt a lot better."The Angels said Guerrero is day to day.Los Angeles has won four-of-five against the Rangers this season. The game Tuesday, a week after they played a season opener, was the first not decided by just one run.Orlando Cabrera drove in three runs. Juan Rivera replaced Guerrero and had a two-run double when the Angels scored three times in the seventh.John Lackey (1-0) worked into the sixth inning, when he left with no outs, the bases loaded and a 9-3 lead. Brendan Donnelly got out of that jam with two strikeouts and a popup to the catcher."That was awesome," Lackey said.Scioscia said Donnelly holding the Rangers without a run in the sixth was the best performance of the game.Scot Shields got four outs for his first save, taking over with two men on after Esteban Yan had already allowed three runs in the eighth.Chris Young (0-1) allowed seven runs over 3 1/3 innings.Cabrera had a two-run single, which scored Guerrero, and Garret Anderson had an RBI double in the first when Los Angeles took a 3-0 lead. After another single in the third inning, Guerrero reached on a fielder's choice and scored one of the Angels' three runs in the fourth. He didn't return to right field in the bottom of the fourth.Guerrero has a 23-game hitting streak against Texas, the longest active streak in the majors by a player against another team. He finished 2-for-3, upping his average to .313 with two home runs and six RBI through eight games.Last season, his first with the Angels, Guerrero hit .337 with 39 homers and 126 RBI.Rivera's two-run double came on the first pitch thrown by R.A. Dickey, who the day before allowed Cabrera's game-winning homer in the 10th inning on the first pitch he threw.David Dellucci and Adrian Gonzalez hit solo homers for the Rangers, the latter from the rookie coming in the eighth inning. Hank Blalock was 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBI.Dellucci's second homer of the season came in the second, an inning before Michael Young had an RBI single and Mark Teixeira's run-scorer grounder that got Texas to 4-3.Chone Figgins, who had been 0-for-17 this season against the Rangers, led off the fourth and fifth innings for Los Angeles with doubles, scoring both times.Dickey left with a full count and two outs in the ninth. After throwing a pitch to Anderson, the right-hander dropped to his knee and indicated that his arm was hurting."He said he felt a little pain the pitch before, there was a little pain coming down his arm, which could indicate a nerve problem," manager Buck Showalter said.Dickey, a former No. 1 pick who pitches with a ligament missing from his right elbow, was expected to have an MRI on Wednesday morning.Game notes
Brian Shouse took over for Dickey and threw a strike to end the inning. ... Young is the first player in the majors with an eight-game hitting streak this season. He has hit in every game, with just two strikeouts in 40 plate appearances. ... Anderson has driven in a run in six of the last seven games. ... Dellucci has walked seven times in his four starts.
