Petco Park, San Diego, California
W: J. Thomson (2-3)
L: C. Young (3-3)
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- One night after Chipper Jones lamented Atlanta's inability to score runs in San Diego, the Braves gave Petco Park and the Padres' pitching staff a good workout.
Andruw Jones hit a pair of two-run homers and Chipper Jones had four singles and scored three runs to lead the Braves to a 10-6 win over the Padres on Wednesday night.Atlanta scored just four runs total in the first two games of the series."This is a difficult park to hit in," Chipper Jones said. "It's a spacious yard, but they have always pitched well against us here and they play good defense, so it's not an easy place to score runs."Just as I say that, we come out and score 10. I guess I'm going to have to use the reverse psychology more often."Edgar Renteria also homered, Andruw Jones scored three runs and Adam LaRoche had three RBI for the Braves, who took two of three from the slumping Padres. Taking advantage of catcher Mike Piazza's weak arm, Chipper Jones and Matt Diaz each stole two bases.San Diego lost for the seventh time in nine games.John Thomson (2-3) went 7 1/3 innings for the win, allowing eight hits and six runs, four earned. He struck out three and walked one.San Diego's Chris Young was knocked out after three innings, his shortest start of the year.Young (3-3) fell behind 3-0 before he got two outs in the first inning. Renteria hit a solo homer into the home-run porch down the right-field line with one out, Chipper Jones singled and Andruw Jones ended his 71 at-bat homerless drought by going deep into the left-field corner on a full-count."It felt good, period," Andruw Jones said. "Everybody came out swinging the bat pretty good and when guys made mistakes we took advantage. I had a couple of fastballs to hit and I just jumped on them, hit them out of the park."Chipper Jones singled leading off the third, and Andruw Jones hit Young's next pitch off the top of the fence in straightaway center field for a 5-1 lead.Center fielder Mike Cameron leaped for the ball but had the wrong angle."I should have jumped straight up," Cameron said. "I had a chance at catching it. It was a play I should have made."Andruw Jones has 11 homers this year. It was his second multihomer game this year and the 32nd of his career. Chipper Jones finished 4-for-5."It's a welcome sight," Chipper Jones said of Andruw Jones' homers. "He can provide a lot of offense in a hurry when he's swinging that well. He hasn't been swinging that well at all, but it was good to see him go out there tonight and be aggressive from the very beginning and carry it throughout the night."Todd Pratt hit an RBI single with two outs in the third to make it 6-1.Young allowed six runs and eight hits, struck out four and walked one."He pitches up; That's part of his game," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He was a little off with his command and was catching the heart of the plate there. They're a good fastball-hitting team and took advantage of some mistakes."The Braves added four runs against San Diego's bullpen. LaRoche hit a sacrifice fly off Brian Sweeney in the fourth, when the Braves left the bases loaded.LaRoche added a two-run double off Jim Brower in the sixth, and Pratt had another RBI single.Piazza had two RBI singles, including the hit that chased Thomson in the eighth. Brian Giles also had two RBI singles for the Padres.Game notes
Atlanta's John Smoltz will have his next start pushed back from Saturday to Sunday to give him an extra day's rest. Saturday's starter at Chicago will either be Jorge Sosa on three days' rest or LHP Horacio Ramirez, who would have to come off the DL. ... Braves C Brian McCann tweaked his sprained ankle while pinch hitting on Tuesday night. ... Padres C Rob Bowen is scheduled to begin a two-game minor league rehab on Friday with Class A Lake Elsinore, then be activated. He's been on the DL since May 11 with a sprained left thumb. ... San Diego LHP Shawn Estes had a setback in his rehab and will take longer than originally expected to return from a strained ligament in his pitching elbow. He was put on the DL after his first start of the season.
