SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- It hasn't taken long for the Colorado pitching staff to impress Jeremy Affeldt.

Jason Jennings turned in another quality start but Affeldt got the win when Clint Barmes singled home the go-ahead run in the 11th inning of the Rockies' 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night.

"It's been amazing to watch these guys pound the strike zone and go seven or eight innings," said Affeldt, who joined the Rockies last week. "That's a lot of rest for the bullpen. It's some of the best pitching I've seen in a long time from starters."

Jennings was nearly unhittable, turning in his ninth quality start in his last 10. He allowed one run and five hits in seven innings. Jennings struck out six and didn't walk a batter. He retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced.

"It was one of those games where you had the feeling one big inning or one mistake would be the difference-maker," Jennings said. "I was a little too strong in the first inning and that's when I tend to get into trouble. Once I got tired in the third and fourth I settled down."

Giants starter Noah Lowry pitched into the ninth inning for just the second time, facing the minimum over his last five innings and he allowed just one runner past second after Matt Holliday doubled and scored in the second.

"I had all four of my pitches going and I was getting ahead," Lowry said. "It was definitely one of my better games. But Jennings threw a great game and had great stuff."

The Rockies improved to 10-10 in San Francisco's new ballpark after opening 9-29 here.

"This is a tough place to come in and play," Barmes said. "You have to earn your wins. I had a good at bat and got a good swing on a pitch that found a hole. I didn't even hit it all that well."

The Rockies remained 2 ½ games back of the San Diego Padres in the NL West, a situation they haven't been in since being eight games over .500 in September of 1996.

"It's the first time we've been in this position," Jennings said. "Usually we're out of it this time of the year. We're just trying to hang around and make it interesting come September."

Choo Freeman walked to open the 11th and was sacrificed to second by pinch-hitter Josh Fogg. After Brad Hennessey (4-2) struck out Jamey Carroll, Barmes hit a soft liner into right field easily scoring Freeman.

"It's one of the best feelings you can have in this game and why we keep playing, hoping to get these opportunities," Barmes said. "Jason has been unbelievable for us all year; it stinks that he can't get the win."

Affeldt (1-0) pitched two innings to pick up his first NL win. Brian Fuentes pitched the 11th for his 22nd save in 26 chances.

Barry Bonds had a RBI double in the first for his 1,900th RBI. The double moved him past Stan Musial into second place all-time with 1,378 extra base hits. He also tied Wade Boggs for 16th with 578 doubles.

That still didn't keep the Giants from losing their 11th in 12 games.

"It's tough to waste a performance like that from Noah," Giants manager Felipe Alou said. "He pitched a great ball game."

A day after Bonds was ejected by umpire Ron Kulpa, Rockies manager Clint Hurdle was thrown out by home plate umpire Dan Iassogna after a lengthy, heated argument in the sixth.

The disagreement was preceded when Iassogna declared Barmes out on catcher's interference. Barmes, protecting Jamey Carroll on a stolen base attempt, swung at a pitch out and hit Todd Greene's mitt instead.

Lowry, who never got past the sixth inning in five previous starts against the Rockies, struck out five of the last nine hitters he faced and matched his season high with six. He gave up four hits and two walks.

Omar Vizquel hit a one-out double in the first and scored when Bonds doubled.

The Rockies matched that in the second when Holliday singled and scored on Todd Helton's single.

Both pitchers were dominating afterward. Jennings retired 18 of the final 21 batters he faced, including 10 of the last 11.

Game notes

Fuentes hasn't allowed a run in his last eight appearances spanning nine innings. ... Giants RHP Jamey Wright will start for the Giants on Tuesday at Arizona. ... Lowry, who has three or fewer strikeouts in 13 of his 18 starts, struck out the side in the seventh. ... Rockies' Jamey Carroll was caught stealing in the sixth, the first time he's been thrown out this season. He was successful in his first nine attempts. ... The Rockies have won three straight for the first time since sweeping a four-game set from the Nationals in Washington, June 12-15.
