• Summary: Despite knocking around Detroit starter Chad Durbin for six runs in just four innings, Toronto's pitching couldn't maintain the lead. The Blue Jays pitchers gave up six runs in the final three innings to surrender the loss.
• Hero: Pinch-hitter Marcus Thames stepped to the plate in ninth and had a broken-bat double into left field to give the Tigers the lead that they would not relinquish. • Unsung hero: Tiger's reliever Jason Grilli gets the honor. Not because of his three scoreless innings of relief, but because Detroit manager Jim Leyland thinks so. "Grilli won the game for us in my opinion," Leyland said. "If I was a teammate and not a manager, I'd take him out to eat tonight." • Goat: Toronto closer B.J. Ryan walked the bases loaded in the ninth inning and then couldn't get out of the jam. He blew his second save of the season Saturday. • Figure this: Toronto's Alex Rios extended his season-long hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the first inning. • Elias Says: This is the fourth time in his career Ryan has walked at least three straight batters. -- ESPN.com news services |
