U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois
W: R. Tejeda (2-1)
L: J. Garland (0-1)
|
• Summary: Sammy Sosa hit a three-run homer in his return to Chicago, and Brad Wilkerson hit his 100th career homer as the Rangers clobbered the White Sox.
• Turning Point: Wilkerson's two-run homer in the fifth put the Rangers on the board at U.S. Cellular Field. Wilkerson's two-out, two-run drive came right after the White Sox failed to follow through with a possible inning-ending double play. • Hero: Sosa hadn't played in Chicago since 2004 and was booed in the Windy City, but he looked like the Sammy of old. • Did you see that? In the bottom of the fourth, Jim Thome swung and missed and his bat flew into the box seats, striking a fan. • Quotable: "I will walk Teixeira tomorrow and pitch to Sammy Sosa every day this year. I'm not scared of Sammy." -- White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen defending his decision to intentionally walk Teixeira • Elias Says: Sosa has three home runs in 11 games this season. It's only the fourth time in his 18 years in the majors that Sosa has hit three or more home runs in his first 11 games of a season. He also did it in 1991 (three homers in his first 11 games), 2001 (four) and 2002 (five). -- ESPN.com news services |
Rangers 8, White Sox 1
Game notes
Wilkerson's homer was his 100th. He limped off the field in the bottom of the ninth with a sore left knee and might miss Wednesday's game. ... White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen shuffled his lineup, moving Iguchi back to the No. 2 spot in the order. Darin Erstad took over as the leadoff hitter after Scott Podsednik went on the DL with an adductor muscle strain.
