• Summary: Russell Martin's first career grand slam was the difference maker. Martin hit the walk-off in the 10th inning to send the Dodgers past the Pirates 7-3.
• Turning point: Down 3-2 in the ninth, pinch-hitter Wilson Valdez advanced to second on a wild pitch and then moved safely to third on a throwing error by Pirates catcher Ronny Paulino. Valdez then scored the tying run off a Paulino passed ball. • Figure this: Besides his costly ninth, Paulino went 0-for-4 from the plate on his 26th birthday. • Making it count: Entering Martin's at-bat in the 10th, the Dodgers were 1-for-19 with bases loaded this season. • Quotable: "It seems like he's got a new attitude out there this year. He's keeping his composure a little bit better. It's helping him out. When you're out there cussing and stuff and getting angry, it really doesn't help you." -- Russell Martin on ejected manager Grady Little. -- ESPN.com news services |
