• Summary: Detroit's Andrew Miller threw six shutout innings of four-hit baseball as the Tigers sent the Braves to their fifth straight loss. Gary Sheffield and Magglio Ordonez were a combined 4-for-10 with an RBI and two runs to lead the Tigers' offense.
• Unsung hero: Miller was pulled after walking Andruw Jones to open the seventh inning, but reliever Chad Durbin didn't miss a beat. He allowed two hits over three innings and struck out three as he got his first career save. • Figure this: The Tigers tied the Angels for the best interleague record (14-4) this season. Detroit has won seven straight and 13 of its last 17. • Figure this II: On the other side of the interleague coin are the Braves. They're 4-11 in interleague play and have lost six of their last seven games. • Quotable: "Here's a kid that says 'Skip, what can I do for the team.' When you have that kind of attitude ... that's a good sign. He didn't do anything to pitch his way out of the rotation. He was hopefully a beneficiary of the situation. I don't want to say he was a victim." -- Tigers manager Jim Leyland on Durbin -- ESPN.com news services |
