Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
W: E. Bedard (6-4)
L: R. Clemens (1-3)
|
• Summary: Roger Clemens was denied his 350th win by the Orioles, who used a four-run sixth inning and solid pitching by Erik Bedard to shut out the Yankees.
• Turning point: Chris Gomez singled and Nick Markakis drew a walk before Ramon Hernandez singled in the game's first run. Aubrey Huff then ended the longest home run drought of his career when the first baseman hit a three-run shot into left field. • Hero: Bedard gave up two hits and a walk, struck out eight and did not allow a runner past first base. • Goat: Clemens was outdone by Bedard. The 44-year-old allowed four runs, seven hits and three walks in six innings. He has a 5.32 ERA. • Figure this: Clemens' run of 200 consecutive starts with at least one strikeout also ended. It was the third-longest run by an active major leaguer, behind Pedro Martinez and Javier Vazquez. • Quotable: "Right now, it certainly is puzzling. You really can't worry about the season as much as you need to worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow we need to come out here and start winning." -- Yankees manager Joe Torre on New York's recent slump -- ESPN.com news services |
