• Summary: Frank Thomas became the 21st player in major league history to hit 500 home runs, but the Twins rallied from a four-run deficit to beat Toronto 8-5.
• Turning point: Minnesota's four-run fifth inning. The Twins chipped away at a 5-3 deficit, then the first of Torii Hunter's two homers catapulted them into the lead.
• Hero: Thomas. Never one for show, the Big Hurt casually broke into his 500th home run trot. He was treated to an ovation from the Metrodome crowd, and also doubled and tied his season high with four RBIs -- and got ejected in the ninth! • Unsung hero: AL MVP Justin Morneau, just for showing up. Morneau returned to the Minnesota lineup after missing six games with a bruised lung. He drove in a run in three at-bats at DH. • Figure this: Twins shortstop Jason Bartlett twice stole second base and is 15-for-15 in attempts this year. • Quotable: "I'm probably the first to get 500 home runs and get thrown out of the ballgame. That's something I didn't want to happen." -- Thomas -- ESPN.com news services |
Twins 8, Blue Jays 5
Game notes
Hunter has eight two-homer games. ... Bartlett twice stole second base and is 15-for-15 in attempts this year. ... Jason Phillips had a passed ball in the sixth, the second straight game a Toronto catcher has allowed a passed ball.
