W: F. Hernandez (11-7)
L: R. Clemens (6-6)
|
• Summary: Ichiro Suzuki had three hits, including a homer in the third, and Feliz Hernandez was solid on the mound, helping the Mariners snap a nine-game losing streak and close to within a game of the front-running Yankees in the AL wild-card race.
• The King is back: Hernandez (11-7) outpitched Yankees starter Roger Clemens, allowing just five hits over seven innings. He struck out five and walked four to improve to 5-1 in his last eight starts. • Injury update: Clemens was to have an MRI on his pitching elbow, which tightened up during the game. Manager Joe Torre believes the Rocket won't make his next scheduled start. "It's happened earlier this year, too, the same type of thing," Torre said of Clemens' elbow pain. "It's something that comes and goes. It doesn't mean it's debilitating. It just means it's muscular stuff." • Did you know? Ichiro's homer gave him 200 hits for the seventh straight season, tying the AL record.• Quotable: "I hate being touched by other people so rather than being touched I'd rather run away from them." -- Ichiro, on promptly racing to the dugout before being tagged in a fourth-inning rundown situation. • Hunt for October: Despite a 1-9 record in their last 10 games, the Mariners are within one of the Yankees' wild-card lead. -- ESPN.com news services |
Mariners 7, Yankees 1
NEW YORK (AP) -- The video system wasn't working very well, so Ichiro Suzuki didn't get to study any of Roger Clemens' outings.
Game notes
Yankees 1B Andy Phillips has a broken right wrist and will have surgery Tuesday, most likely sidelining him for the rest of the year. Phillips was hit by a pitch during New York's 8-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday. Jason Giambi started against Seattle. ... Suzuki leads the majors with 65 multihit games. ... Mariners closer J.J. Putz pitched the ninth in a non-save situation.
