Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
W: B. Howry (6-7)
L: G. Majewski (0-3)
|
• Summary: The Cubs rallied for a strange run in the eighth inning to beat the Reds.
• Turning point: Ken Griffey Jr. fielded a Derrek Lee single and came up lame, having to underhand the throw to the infield. But Ryan Theriot held up at third anyway. He scored when Adam Dunn trapped a fly in left.
• Hero: Alfonso Soriano hit the first pitch he saw in the game out of the park and then threw out the go-ahead run at the plate in the eighth. • Unsung hero: Bob Howry threw two innings for the win. • Hunt for October: The Cubs moved one game ahead of the Brewers in the NL Central. • Quotable: "If ever there was a must-game for us this year, truthfully this was it." -- Cubs manager Lou Piniella -- ESPN.com news services |
