WASHINGTON (AP) -- Ryan Zimmerman raised a fist when he rounded first, then tossed away his helmet as he approached the plate and the mass of teammates waiting to celebrate his game-ending homer.
The kid sure knows how to throw a housewarming party.Firsts From The First
Some first occurences from Sunday night's inaugural regular-season major league game at Nationals Park in Washington:
Pitch: Thrown by Nats LHP Odalis Perez to Atlanta's Kelly Johnson at 8:21 p.m. It was fouled off.
Strikeout: Perez got Johnson to swing and miss at strike three at 8:22.
Walk: Perez walked the game's second batter, Yunel Escobar, at 8:26.
Hit: Washington's Cristian Guzman led off the bottom of the first by lining Tim Hudson's first pitch to right field for a single at 8:32.
Error: Hudson's pickoff throw to first base went wide of the bag, allowing Guzman to advance to third at 8:33.
Extra-base hit: Washington's Nick Johnson lined a 1-2 pitch to right field off Hudson for an RBI double in the bottom of the first at 8:41.
Run: Guzman came around to score on Johnson's hit.
Home run: Atlanta's Chipper Jones drove a 2-0 pitch from Perez into the second row in left-center for a solo shot in the fourth inning at 9:14.
Blown save: Washington's Jon Rauch came on to protect a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning, and he was one out away from earning the save. But a passed ball allowed pinch runner Martin Prado to score, tying the game at 2-all.
Nationals homer: Ryan Zimmerman's solo shot off Atlanta's Peter Moylan with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, breaking a 2-2 tie at 10:43.
Game notes
The Nationals put LF Elijah Dukes (right hamstring) on the DL after the game. Dukes, whose hamstring has been bothering him for a couple of weeks, left the game after grounding out in the fifth. ... After years of wearing "C. Jones" on the back of his Braves jersey -- because Andruw Jones, now with the Dodgers, was a teammate -- Chipper Jones was identified Sunday simply as "Jones."
