SAN DIEGO (AP) -- After a brutal stretch of injuries and poor play, the San Diego Padres finally had something to celebrate.

Of course, the Padres being the Padres, even this didn't come easy.

The lights were on and the sun was going down when Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer with two outs in the 18th inning to give San Diego a 12-9 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday in a matchup of last-place teams.

It was the fourth time the Padres played at least 13 innings this season. They played a 22-innning game at home against Colorado on April 17-18, losing 2-1.

"It was a good team effort. It was done by everybody and that's what this team needs in order for us to win," Gonzalez said. "After a game this long and especially after the Colorado game, you want to win this game and get something going."

The Padres get Memorial Day off, and they were certainly in a party mood.

"It was a great clubhouse scene after the game," manager Bud Black said. "As much as we'll remember, long-term, the 22-inning game, the guys will remember this one, too. This was a great win."

The game lasted 5 hours, 57 minutes. It tied for the third-longest game by innings in Reds history.

The victory came after a week in which the Padres lost three key players. Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy went on the disabled list with a swollen right elbow, and All-Star right-hander Chris Young will be out indefinitely after breaking his nose when he was struck by a line drive hit by Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols on Wednesday night. Catcher Josh Bard sprained his left ankle when Pujols slid into him that same inning, and is also on the disabled list.

The last team to play a game of at least 22 and 17 innings in the same season was the 1989 Los Angeles Dodgers, who played two 22-inning games and a 17-inning game.

Scott Hairston started the winning rally with a one-out walk off Edinson Volquez (7-2), the second starting pitcher the Reds put on the mound in extra innings. Brian Giles reached on first baseman Joey Votto's two-out throwing error, moving Hairston to third. Gonzalez then hit a full-count changeup over the fence in straightaway center for his 14th homer.

"He's been throwing a lot of changeups to guys before that and I figured why would he throw me a fastball?" Gonzalez said. "I just made sure I stayed back and he threw it for a strike and I was able to take advantage."

Catcher David Ross called for a fastball.

"I changed my mind and instead threw the changeup," Volquez said. "I threw the wrong pitch. I have to die with my best pitch.'

Josh Banks (1-0) scattered five hits over six innings for his first big league win. He was called up from Triple-A Portland on Thursday, the day after Young went on the DL.

Paul Bako, the Reds' last position player, pinch-hit for Aaron Harang and struck out with the bases loaded to end the top of the 17th.

The Padres struck out 19 times, giving them 58 in the four-game series.

The Reds used three starting pitchers in extra innings.

With no relievers left, Harang, the starter and loser in the series opener on Thursday night, came on to start the 13th. He struck out nine in four innings.

Volquez, who struck out 12 while getting a no-decision in the Reds' victory Friday night, pitched the 17th and 18th.

Reds manager Dusty Baker said he's never used one starter in extra innings, let alone two.

"Three times we could have won the game and three times they fought back," Baker said. "You hate to see Edinson lose that game on an unearned run when we were out of the inning."

Bronson Arroyo, who beat the Padres on Saturday night, had a pinch-hit single with two outs in the 13th but was stranded.

The Reds went ahead three times in the late innings. The Padres tied it each time, twice on homers.

Cincinnati's Brandon Phillips hit a two-run homer in the seventh for a 6-5 lead.

San Diego's Kevin Kouzmanoff homered off David Weathers leading off the Padres' eighth to tie it. It was Kouzmanoff's first career two-homer game and his fourth shot in six games.

In the ninth, Ken Griffey Jr. scored from second on pinch-hitter Ryan Freel's two-out single off Trevor Hoffman for a 7-6 lead.

Hairston brought the Padres back by homering off Francisco Cordero leading off the ninth. It was the first of two blown saves for the Reds.

Cincinnati jumped ahead 9-7 in the 11th when pinch-hitter Paul Janish singled off rookie Jared Wells, bringing in Griffey and Phillips.

The Padres came back a third time, getting two runs on three hits in the bottom of the 11th. Tadahito Iguchi brought in the first run on a grounder and Giles tied it on a double off Josh Fogg, who blew a chance at his first big league save.

Griffey, who hit his 598th homer on Thursday night, and Phillips each had three hits and three runs. Phillips also had a two-run homer in the seventh.

Kouzmanoff also homered leading off the fourth, off starter Matt Belisle.

Greg Maddux had a decent start for the Padres, leaving with a 5-4 lead in the sixth. His chance at his 351st victory disappeared when Cla Meredith gave up Phillips' two-run homer in the seventh to give the Reds a 6-5 lead.

Maddux has two no-decisions and a loss since winning his 350th game on May 10 against Colorado. He held the Reds to one earned run and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The Padres had leads of 3-0 and 4-1 before the Reds tied it at 4 with three unearned runs in the fifth, including Adam Dunn's two-run homer.

Paul McAnulty hit a solo homer in the three-run second, his third.

With his 251st homer, Dunn tied Ted Kluszewski for the most by a left-handed hitter in Reds history and for fourth on the club's career list. ... It was Harang's fourth relief appearance in 174 big league games. ... Griffey had two doubles, tying Jimmie Foxx and Ted Williams for 13th place with 1,117 extra-base hits.
