CHICAGO (AP) -- Troy Glaus was hitless this season against the Chicago Cubs. Nothing to show in 30 at-bats. Then with two swings Saturday, the big slump disappeared.

Glaus hit two of the St. Louis Cardinals' four homers off Carlos Zambrano to lead a 12-3 thumping of the Cubs.

Skip Schumaker and Albert Pujols also connected off the Cubs' ace, who was driven out after 4 1/3 innings.

"It's the hardest I've ever seen him get hit. That never happens, it really doesn't," Schumaker said. "It was one of those fluke type things."

Zambrano gave up nine runs and 10 hits in his short outing. The four homers allowed by Zambrano were a career high, while the nine runs tied the most he'd ever given up.

"My job is pitching. My job is to go to the mound and throw six, seven, eight innings, but today I didn't do my job," said Zambrano, who wasn't sure how many homers he gave up.

"I lost the count. How many? Four. Well, good for them," he said. "There is nothing you can do about it. Just move on and think of my next start."

Glaus was 0-for-29 against the Cubs before fouling out to the catcher in his first at-bat Saturday.

"I really had no idea. It's one of those things," Glaus said. "For me, as long as I'm having good at-bats and going up there not making bad outs, I'm OK. Obviously at 0-for-29 it didn't turn around for a while. ... I was able to get a couple in there and take advantage of a couple balls he left up."

Glaus' second homer of the day was a three-run shot in the fifth that finished Zambrano (12-5), who suffered his first loss of the season at Wrigley Field, where he'd been 6-0.

"His location wasn't good at all," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "That's the hardest I've seen 'Z' get hit in the last two years I've been here. I thought he'd throw the ball better. ... But it happens to anybody. The Cardinals are a good hitting team."

In a span of six batters, the Cardinals homered three times on a day the wind was blowing out at only 4 mph at the first pitch. But the wind picked up during the game and the ball was carrying.

Schumaker and Pujols drove out solo homers in the third for a 3-1 Cardinals lead. Glaus had a two-run homer in the fourth to put the Cardinals up 5-2.

"We were aggressive and the wind was blowing out. It was one of those weird days at Wrigley," Schumaker said. "It's finally good to get to a guy like that because he's very good."

Chicago's Mark DeRosa had tied the game at 1-1 with a homer to center in bottom of the second off Todd Wellemeyer (9-4), who was making his first appearance at Wrigley Field since the Cubs traded him away in March 2006.

Wellemeyer, who was a reliever in parts of three seasons with the Cubs, pitched 6 2/3 innings. He was charged with three runs and gave up six hits, including a solo homer to Zambrano leading off the third. Zambrano's homer was his third of the season and 15th of his career, extending his club record for pitchers.

"I loved playing here and I definitely wanted to come in here and give them a game," Wellemeyer said.

The Cardinals quickly got to Zambrano when Schumaker hit the game's first pitch for a double and scored on Ryan Ludwick's two-out single off Chad Gaudin.

Leading 9-3, St. Louis tacked on three in the ninth with Ludwick hitting a sacrifice fly and Yadier Molina adding a two-run single.

Zambrano had given up only 10 homers in 146 2/3 innings this season before Saturday. ... Cards' RHP Adam Wainwright (right middle finger sprain) made his first rehab start Friday night since being placed on the disabled list on June 8. He gave up three runs and four hits in two-thirds of an inning while striking out one and walking one. ... OF Rick Ankiel was out of the starting lineup for a 13th straight game with an abdominal strain but had a pinch-hit single in the ninth. ... One day after homering twice against his former team, Cubs CF Jim Edmonds went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. ... Zambrano also gave up nine runs against the Pirates on Sept. 19, 2003 in Pittsburgh, but only six were earned that day. All nine runs Saturday were earned as Zambrano's ERA jumped from 2.76 to 3.22.
