Indians turn double plays in six straight innings to control Royals in victory
CLEVELAND -- Indians pitcher Aaron Laffey was pleased he was able to keep the ball down during key spots. Kansas City manager Trey Hillman was upset with his team's approach at the plate.
The result was an impressive night for Cleveland's defense.Grady Sizemore hit a three-run homer and the Indians turned double plays in six straight innings in an 8-7 victory over the Royals on Tuesday.Fast Facts
• Aaron Laffey became the first pitcher to induce a double-play groundout in five consecutive innings since the Tigers' Les Cain on May 6, 1970, against the Twins. The Royals grounded into six double plays in total, tying an AL record done most recently by the Rays in 2004.
• Victor Martinez homered for the fifth time this season, more than doubling his 2008 total (two).
• Sidney Ponson allowed six earned runs in 3 1/3 innings, bringing his career ERA against the Tribe to 8.96 -- the highest ERA by any pitcher who has started at least 10 games against Cleveland.
