MINNEAPOLIS -- Getaway day started a little bit early for the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins.
Jason Varitek hit two home runs, then was one of four people ejected by young umpire Todd Tichenor during separate arguments in the seventh inning of Boston's 3-1 victory over Minnesota on Thursday.Fast Facts
• In his first career start at the Metrodome, Josh Beckett scattered three hits and four walks while striking out eight in seven innings to move to 3-1 all-time vs. the Twins.
• Jason Varitek hit a pair of solo home runs, his ninth career multihomer game and his second this season. Varitek, with 10 homers this season, had 13 in 131 games all of last season; but it's his eighth straight season with at least 10 homers.
• Both starting catchers and managers for the Twins and Red Sox were ejected in an eventful seventh inning: Mike Redmond and Ron Gardenhire for the Twins in the top half; Varitek and Terry Francona for the Red Sox in the bottom half.
• Jacoby Ellsbury went 0-for-3, ending his 22-game hit streak.
