W: P. Byrd (1-0)
L: R. Halladay (13-8)
Byrd pitches six shutout innings as Red Sox drop Halladay, Blue Jays
BOSTON -- It was a scene right out of the movies. A former major league right-hander spends the spring and early summer throwing batting practice to his son's team before he returns to the bigs with six shutout innings.
Why Paul Byrd Won
• All three hits against him were to leadoff batters. The Blue Jays were 0 for 7 with RISP against him.
• He recorded only one swinging strike and let the defense play behind him. Of the 20 pitches put in play against Byrd, 19 of them were in the zone.
• Toronto hitters were 0 for 8 against off-speed pitches.
• The Blue Jays had a .167 average against Byrd on the first two pitches of an at-bat.
