SAN FRANCISCO -- Brad Penny didn't throw a single pitch as hard as he could. San Francisco's hitters were swinging so early in the count, the St. Louis right-hander never had to.
Because of it, the Cardinals avoided being swept by the Giants for the first time in nine years and extended their lead to 2 1/2 games in the NL Central.Fast Facts
• Pablo Sandoval (3-for-4 with a double) and Andres Torres (3-for-3 with a double) combined for six of the eight hits against Brad Penny on Sunday.
The rest of the Giants were 2-for-22 off him, with one sac bunt and no walks.
• Five of the eight hits against Penny came with two outs.
• Penny has now pitched seven or more innings, with two earned runs or fewer, in all four starts this season, and nine of his last 10 dating to Sept. 2.
