• Marchand: Bad choices doom CC
Why Santana Won
• Was deadly with two strikes. Johan Santana held the Yankees to 2-15 in two-strike counts and got them to chase 52.6 percent of pitches out of the zone, well above the MLB average two-strike chase percentage of 35.5.
• Commanded the low outside corner. Yankees hitters were 0-7 on pitches low and away, missing four of their eight swings and striking out three times.
• Used the slider effectively. Santana only threw 14 sliders, but held the Yankees to 0-6 on the pitch, getting pinstriped hitters to chase four of the eight sliders out of the zone and strike out twice.

Game notes
Cora filled in at 2B for Luis Castillo, scratched because of his sore left foot. ... Yankees RHP Javier Vazquez is slated to start Thursday night at Minnesota despite a bruised right index finger. Vazquez's bullpen session, however, was pushed back a day to Tuesday to give his finger more time to heal. He bruised the finger while bunting Friday night.
