W: C. Pavano (9-6)
L: J. Santana (5-5)
NEW YORK -- By the time Johan Santana figured out his former teammates were avoiding his befuddling changeup, the Minnesota Twins had given Carl Pavano all the run support he needed.
Sigh Young
Johan Santana began the season looking like he had regained his dominant form from years past. But over his last four starts, Santana has pitched like anything but a two-time Cy Young Award winner.

Game notes
Minnesota activated LHP Jose Mijares from the restricted list. He was in Venezuela for a family medical emergency. To make roster room, the Twins optioned RHP Jeff Manship to Triple-A Rochester. ... Mets CF Angel Pagan (muscle spasms in right side) said he took swings from the right side and felt good. He will take swings from the left side Sunday and thinks he should be available to play defense or pinch-run. ... New York CF Carlos Beltran, recovering from offseason knee surgery, went 3 for 4 with two singles, a double and two RBIs in his third rehab game for Class A St. Lucie. He also scored a run and played seven innings in center field. "I'm feeling better," Beltran said, according to a Mets statement. "I'm not thinking about my knee, I'm just reacting."

Research Notes
How Twins starter Carl Pavano shut down the Mets:
- Froze 'em: Pavano's fastball averaged only 89.8 mph, but the Mets were reluctant to swing at it. Their swing percentage of 34.8 was the lowest of any Pavano opponent this season, as was their 1-for-14 (.071) average at putting heaters in play.
- Kept it away: Pavano threw 54 pitches (one less than half) on either the outer third of the plate or outside. A full 63% of those went for strikes, and the Mets were 0-for-13 when they made contact.
- Finished 'em off: All three Met hits came on the first or second pitch of an at-bat. From the third pitch onward, New York went 0-for-19.
- Faced the minimum three batters in seven of his nine innings; also had four innings with pitch counts in the single digits. |
Carl Pavano is the 6th pitcher this season to throw back-to-back complete games, joining C.C. Sabathia, Adam Wainwright, Dallas Braden, Matt Cain and Cliff Lee.
Pavano joins Lee, however, as the only pitchers to WIN back-to-back complete games.
Pavano is the first TWIN to win consecutive complete games since Brad Radke in July 1997. |
