TORONTO -- David Ortiz knows plenty about power hitting and he doesn't understand why Jose Bautista isn't in the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game.

Research Notes
Brandon Morrow threw 102 pitches in just four innings on the mound Saturday. That's the second-most this season by any starter who did not at least make it into the fifth inning. (Several others have thrown more in 4.0 IP, but they worked INTO the 5th without getting an out.) [+]Most pitches, starter not reaching 5th inning - This season

Alex Gonzalez smacked an 80.3-mph curveball from John Lackey for his 17th homer. The pitch was left high (for a curveball): slightly above and slightly outside of the exact middle of the zone.
Over the past three seasons, 61.4% of Lackey's curveballs are down in the zone or below it, like they should be. He's held opponents to a .172 average on those. It's when he misses and leaves it up, that he gets burned.
In that time, Lackey has allowed just 11 home runs on his curveball-- but 10 of those were on balls that stayed across the middle of the plate vertically instead of dropping. Only one batter (Miguel Cabrera last year) has legitimately hit a Lackey curveball that curved like it was supposed to. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Brandon Morrow needed 41 pitches to get through the Boston lineup once. He needed 36 more to get around the second time.
Red Sox hitters were already the most patient in the majors this season. This number will just go up with today's outing. [+]Team pitches per PA, 2010 season - Entering Saturday
