J.P. Arencibia sparks Blue Jays' homer parade with 2 in first MLB game
TORONTO -- A group of fans wearing blue wigs decided against K signs for each home strikeout at Rogers Centre, opting for HR placards for each Toronto drive instead.
They got plenty of work Saturday. The Blue Jays became the first team to hit eight homers in a game in three years, getting two apiece from Aaron Hill and J.P. Arencibia in a 17-11 victory over the slumping Tampa Bay Rays.Fast Facts
• In the highest-scoring game in MLB this season, Toronto rookie catcher J.P. Arencibia became the first player in the modern era (since 1900) with four hits and two home runs in his major league debut. He had three RBIs.
• Arencibia hit a home run on the first pitch he saw, the third player in team history to homer in his first at-bat (1989 Junior Felix, 1977 Al Woods). He's also the first Blue Jay with a four-hit game in his major league debut.
• The Jays scored a season-high 17 runs on a season-best 20 hits. They hit eight home runs, two shy of their franchise and major league record 10 set back in 1987 against Baltimore.
• Aaron Hill also hit two homers, and Jose Bautista hit his major league-leading 34th.
• Tampa Bay's James Shields allowed a franchise record six home runs, and became the third pitcher in the divisional era (since 1969) to allow six homers in a game. Shields allowed nine hits, all for extra bases. He joined Ricky Nolasco in 2008 as the second pitcher since 1920 to allow nine hits, with all nine going for extra bases.
• The Rays have lost a season-high four straight games.

Sonnanstine will start Sunday in place of RHP Jeff Niemann, who will skip a start because of a sore right shoulder. ... Rays OF Carl Crawford was held out of the starting lineup for the second straight game after playing 11 straight on artificial turf during Tampa Bay's recent homestand. Crawford is expected to return to the lineup Sunday.

Research Notes
From Elias: The Elias Sports Bureau tells us that J.P. Arencibia is the first player in the modern era with 4 hits AND 2 HR in his major-league debut. And he's the first Blue Jay with 4 hits in his ML debut. [+]2 HR in MLB Debut, All Time

Six homers are a lot. But the three NON-home runs that James Shields allowed on Saturday were all doubles. Thus he gave up nine hits, ALL for extra bases.
Since 1920, the Marlins' Ricky Nolasco is the only other pitcher to do that (9+ H, all XBH). That was April 17, 2008, when he worked 4.2 innings against the Braves, allowing four homers, four doubles, and a triple. | ||||||||||||
From Elias: Blue Jays rookie catcher J.P. Arencibia hits a HR in his first ML AB. That has happened just two other times in Blue Jays history before. Junior Felix on May 4, 1989 (home vs Angels) and Al Woods on April 7, 1977 (home vs White Sox).
He had 31 HR in 379 AB at Triple-A Las Vegas this season before being called up Wednesday when John Buck (right thumb) went on the 15-day DL.
It's unfair to expect him to keep that pace up in the majors but it's worth nothing that his minor-league .639 slugging clip this season has been topped by 300-AB catchers just three times in MLB history: Javy Lopez (2003), Ivan Rodriguez (2000) and Rudy York (1937).
