Game notes
Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin will play first base for the first time during next week's series at Washington, Piniella said. The Cubs want to see if Colvin, who last played the position as a college sophomore, is a legitimate option at first for next season. Piniella said he wanted Colvin's first games there to come on the road, away from the Chicago spotlight. ... The Miller Lite sign located on a rooftop past right field usually features a statement that taunts the opposition. Friday, though, it paid tribute to Cox, who is retiring after the season: "BRAVO BOBBY! CHEERS TO 29 YEARS!"

Research Notes
With 2 strikeouts Friday, Billy Wagner ties Jesse Orosco for the most strikeouts by a left-handed reliever (relief appearances only) since 1952. They both have 1169 strikeouts as relievers. [+]Most Strikeouts As Reliever

Carlos Marmol works one inning, strikes out the side, allows only one base hit, and manages to blow the save AND take the loss.
Marmol's runs came because of three walks mixed in with his strikeouts. Since saves became official in 1969, the only other pitcher with a line like Marmol's (1 IP, 3 K, 1 or 0 hits, 3+ walks, and a blown save) is Bryan Harvey of the Angels, who walked three Royals on September 27, 1990.
Harvey-- unlike Marmol-- got bailed out by his offense and also got the win in that game.
Aramis Ramirez homered in the 4th on a first-pitch changeup. Not surprising for the Cubs' big third baseman. Of his 282 career homers, more have come on the first pitch (54) than on any other count (1-1 is next with 37).
Ramirez has swung at 34.9% of all first pitches this season, tied with Marlon Byrd for the highest among Cubs regulars. The ML average is just under 26%. However, Friday was the first time he's homered on a first-pitch CHANGE since May 11, 2007, against Cole Hamels.
