W: C. Sabathia (19-5)
L: D. Braden (9-10)
NEW YORK -- From the very first batter, the Oakland Athletics simply looked overmatched against CC Sabathia.

CC Sabathia's arm did all the talking against the A's, quieting their bats to nary a ball that left the infield after the second inning, writes Wallace Matthews. Story

Research Notes
How Yankees starter CC Sabathia shut down the Athletics:
- Of the 20 balls the A's put in play, 14 were hit on the ground, a season-high 70 pct for Sabathia. In addition, Inside Edge judged that none of the 20 were "well-hit", Sabathia's first start of the season in which he did not allow a "well-hit" ball. The A's hit just six balls in the air off Sabathia, three of which did not leave the infield.
- Sabathia threw 95 pitches, of which 51 were offspeed and 44 were fastballs. It is the first start this season in which Sabathia threw more offspeed pitches than fastballs.
- Sabathia had success with his offspeed pitches down in the zone or below, registering four strikeouts, four ground outs, and a pop out on 27 low offspeed deliveries. All four of the strikeouts came on sliders the Athletics chased below the strike zone.
CC Sabathia is the first Yankee pitcher to throw at least 8 innings while allowing 1 hit or fewer since Andy Pettitte on August 3, 2003 vs the A's. He is the 6th lefty to do it since 1984. [+]8+ IP, 1 H or Fewer

Curtis Granderson is the 3rd Yankee player in franchise history to have a multi-homer game off the bench. He joins Cody Ransom and Steve Balboni, who each did it away from Yankee Stadium. [+]Multi-HR Game off Bench - Yankees History

The Yankees win the season series with the A's 9-1.
That matches the best season series record against the A's by a Yankees team in franchise history. The 1919 Yankees were 18-2 against the Philadelphia A's.
CC Sabathia got his 19th win in the Yankees 134th game.
The last Yankee to reach 19 wins within the team's first 134 games was Andy Pettitte in 1996.
The last Yankee to reach 19 wins in fewer than 134 team games was Tommy John in 1980 (132 team games).
New York's .900 win percentage against Oakland this season matches the franchise's best single-season mark versus the A's. However, Yankee success against Oakland is not necessarily a precursor to postseason success. The Yankees failed to win the World Series in any of the four previous seasons in which they had their best years against the Athletics, and New York missed the playoffs in three of those seasons.
