Nelson said he had never stolen home in any game, at any level, before Thursday. When he got back to the dugout, a lot of players were asking how he did that.

Research Notes
From Elias: FROM ELIAS
It was the fourth time this season that the Rockies won a game after trailing by at least five runs, tying the Tigers for the most such wins in the majors.
It was the third time this season that the Reds lost a game after leading by at least five runs, tying the Red Sox, Rangers and Nationals for the most such losses in the majors. |
From Elias: Last player whose first career SB was a steal of home:
Dan Uggla on April 21, 2006 on a strikeout/double steal.
Last player whose first career SB came on a straight steal of home:
Mike DiFelice, 1997 Cardinals (april 17, at Marlins)
Last steal of home in 8th inning or later to break a tie:
May 27, 2003 Omar Vizquel, Cle. at Det. 8th inn - bases loaded in a 2-2 game.
Description from the Akron Beacon Journal game story
"After Shane Spencer struck out, Vizquel obviously felt extreme measures were called for. He noticed that on every pitch, Avery (a left-hander whose back is to third base) checked the runner at second before delivering the pitch.
As Avery turned to look at Burks at second on a 2-and-2 pitch to Ben Broussard, Vizquel's walking lead turned into a mad dash. By the time Avery knew what was happening, Vizquel was not more than 15 feet from the plate. Avery started to make a throw, then smartly gave up on the idea. No use taking a chance on heaving the ball to the backstop." |
Colorado rookie Chris Nelson's game-winning steal of home in the 8th inning was his 1st career steal, in his 7th career game. |
