NEW YORK -- For one night -- albeit against the pitiful Pittsburgh Pirates -- R.A. Dickey, Carlos Beltran and the New York Mets showed they might be able to end this season on a positive note.
Dickey took a three-hitter into the ninth inning, Beltran had his first three-RBI game in over a year and the Mets might have knocked Zach Duke out of the Pirates' rotation with a 9-1 victory Tuesday night.Mets blog

Research Notes
How Mets starter R.A. Dickey perplexed the Pirates:
- Feeble contact. Of the 30 Bucs at-bats, only 3 ended on well-hit balls (well-hit average .100; MLB avg. Is .267).
- The Pirates were 4-27 (.148) against Dickey's knuckleball, lowering the season mark vs. R.A. to .221. Dickey went to the knuckler on 98 of his 127 pitches.
- Durable. Those 127 pitches were a season-high, easily surpassing his 119 on July 9 and Aug. 18. |
