Rick Ankiel powers Braves past Giants in 11th to even series at 1-1

Ankiel splashed a home run into McCovey Cove in the 11th inning for his first postseason clout and Atlanta rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Friday night, tying their National League Division Series at one game apiece.Arangure: Royal Flush Dealt
The Braves seemed to be in big trouble, and Bobby Cox's career a game from being over, until Atlanta was rescued by a most unlikely duo, ESPN The Magazine's Jorge Arangure Jr. writes. Story

Research Notes
Rick Ankiel hit the 4th go-ahead, extra-inning in Braves postseason history Friday. The clout off San Francisco's Ramon Ramirez lifted Atlanta to a 5-4 win in 11 innings and tied the series at one game apiece.
Ankiel also collected a second-inning single in his 2-for-5 evening. Both of the hits came against fastballs.
Of the 4 "major" pitches (fastball, curve, slider, change), the only pitch against which Ankiel hit above .200 this season is the fastball (.290).
How the Braves bullpen, especially Craig Kimbrel, shut down the Giants:
(After a lackluster start by Tommy Hanson, the Braves bullpen threw 7 shutout innings)
- Threw strikes. The Braves bullpen faced 27 hitters - only 3 saw a 3-ball count. Of the 109 pitches thrown, 75 were strikes (68.8 pct).
- With 4 strikeouts in 2 innings, Kimbrel continued his yearlong pace of 2 K's/inning (combined 45 K's in 23.1 IP in 2010).
- Kimbrel's 33 pitches were his 2nd-most in a game this season. Twenty-five of the 33 deliveries were fastballs and his average heater was 96.5 mph.
- With Billy Wagner injured Friday, Kimbrel is a leading candidate to take over the Braves' closer role.
Rick Ankiel is the 3rd NL centerfielder with a go-ahead HR in extra innings. The others were Jim Edmonds in Game 6 of the 2004 NLCS and Lenny Dykstra in Game 5 of the 1993 NLCS.
Alex Gonzalez is the first shortstop with a game-tying in the 8th inning or later of a postseason game since Tony Womack off Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the 9th in Game 7 of the 2001 World Serieas.
From Elias: Both the Giants and the Reds blew 4-0 leads and lost.
This is the first time in postseason history that two teams blew leads of at least 4 runs on the same day.
Troy Glaus, who made the pivotal double play on Buster Posey in the 10th inning, had played 2 innings at 3rd base in the 2010 regular season.
By the way, the double play was the first bases-loaded ground-ball double play induced by Kyle Farnsworth since 2002 (the last-- by ESPN's Eduardo Perez).
Who closes for the Braves?
A good discussion topic for any future discussion on the series.
2 candidates are...
Kyle Farnsworth, who hasn't saved a game since 2008, but was 10-for-10 in regular season chances for the 2005 Braves
Craig Kimbrel, a rookie ... combining the regular season and postseason, Kimbrel has pitched 23 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. He has a combined 45 strikeouts.
