A's overcome brilliant Mark Buehrle to tie White Sox in 9th, win in 10th
CHICAGO -- In a rare matchup between perfect starting pitchers, it was a young reliever and a catcher that made the difference for the Oakland Athletics.
Catcher Kurt Suzuki homered on a 1-2 pitch from Jesse Crain with two outs in the 10th inning, giving Oakland a 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night."It's a big thrill," said Suzuki. "Any time you can get a hit when it really counts, it's an exciting time."More From ESPNChicago.com

Game notes
Guillen still doesn't have a clear timetable when DH Adam Dunn is going to be back in the lineup. "When he tells me he's ready, I'm going to give him an extra day," said Guillen. Dunn has missed six straight games after undergoing emergency appendectomy surgery on Wednesday. ... RHP Jake Peavy is scheduled to throw 90 pitches in a rehab start on Wednesday. ... The last time two opposing perfect game winners faced was when Arizona's Randy Johnson faced San Diego's David Wells on April 24, 2007. Lillebridge's home run was the 10,000 in franchise history.

Research Notes
Why White Sox starter Mark Buehrle should have beaten the A's:
- Went to the offspeed stuff early and often: Buehrle did not allow a hit in the first five innings, as A's hitters went 0-for-11 during that time in at-bats ending with the curve, slider and changeup. Forty of his first 62 pitches were offspeed (64.5 percent); he threw offspeed pitches just 39.5 percent of the time last season. Entering Monday night, the A's were hitting .289 against fastballs and just .169 against offspeed pitches.
- Kept the ball in the infield: Only five balls (two singles, three flyouts) reached the outfield, three of which were hit by Josh Willingham. As a result, no hitter reached second base off Buehrle.
- Had success in the upper part of the zone: A's hitters went 0-for-11 in at-bats ending with pitches up in the zone or down the middle. Last season, opposing hitters batted .318 off Buehrle in at-bats ending on pitches up in the zone and .320 down the middle. |
The HR in the bottom of the 5th inning by Brent Lillibridge is his 1st of the season and 3rd of his career... BUT...
It is the 10,000th in White Sox history. They are the 15th team to accomplish the feat. |
