Research Notes
How Rangers starter Alexi Ogando shut down the Tigers:
- Started 0-1 to 16 of the 23 Tigers hitters he faced, mostly because the Tigers rarely swung at the first pitch. Just three Detroit hitters swung at the first pitch they saw, and not one put the ball in play. By starting ahead 0-1 to so many hitters, Ogando needed just 79 pitches to get through 7 innings. Only two hitters had a plate appearance of more than five pitches against him, and Ogando did not need more than 14 pitches in any inning.
- Ogando threw 28 sliders, 22 of which went for strikes. Nine of the strikes were called. Tigers hitters were 0-for-10 in at-bats ending with a slider. Seven of the 10 outs against his slider did not leave the infield.
- Stayed ahead of hitters and was effective when he fell behind. Ogando went to only two three-ball counts, throwing just three pitches in those counts. No Tigers hitter reached a 3-0 or 3-1 count against Ogando. He also went to only two 2-0 counts, and in the at-bats ending on 1-0, 2-0 and 2-1 counts, hitters were 0-for-6. | ||||||||||||||||||
