NEW YORK -- That ol' fake-to-third, throw-to-first pickoff play that never, ever works? Trying telling that to the Los Angeles Angels.
Rookie closer Jordan Walden pulled the much-maligned trick and trapped Curtis Granderson for the final out, and the Angels rode Bobby Abreu's two-run homer in the ninth inning off Mariano Rivera to beat the New York Yankees 6-4 Tuesday night.More From ESPNNewYork.com
A.J. Burnett's haircut, Mariano Rivera's cutter let the New York Yankees down in their loss to the Los Angeles Angels, writes Andrew Marchand.

He struck out a career-high 10 in his last start vs. the White Sox. ... DH Jorge Posada was still on the bench for the Yankees. "I'm not happy," he said. "I really can't control not being in the lineup." ...Yankees RHP Phil Hughes will pitch Saturday vs. Tampa Bay. He was supposed to start this game, but got moved back after pitching in relief Sunday night at Boston.

Research Notes
From Elias: Curtis Granderson was caught stealing to end the game as the Yankees lost 6-4 to the Angels.
The last time the Yankees lost a game that ended on a caught stealing was May 7, 2000 against the Orioles. Trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth, the game ended on a strikeout/caught stealing. Scott Brosius struck out and Jorge Posada was caught stealing second base.
Including Eduardo Nunez's steal earlier in the inning, runners were 11 for 11 stealing against Jordan Walden this season prior to Granderson's caught stealing to end the game.
The caught stealing was nothing new for Granderson either. It's the seventh time all season Granderson ended an inning on a caught stealing, the second most in the majors behind Juan Pierre (8).
The Abreu HR off of Rivera was Rivera'a first go-ahead 9th-inning HR allowed at HOME since May 7, 2009 (Carl Crawford).
It was just the 8th such HR allowed in his career.
A.J. Burnett has not won in the month of August since 2008 with the Blue Jays. Since then, he has gone 15 August starts without a win. Only Justin Masterson, who is winless in his last 16 May starts, has a longer active skid in a given month.
