MIAMI -- The sellout crowd in the Miami Marlins' new ballpark cheered the introduction of their starters, who were accompanied by women dressed as Latin showgirls. There was another roar for Muhammad Ali, who delivered the first pitch.Then Kyle Lohse and the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals went to work, and the place grew quiet.Lohse held Miami hitless until the seventh inning and pitched into the eighth to help the Cardinals win the first game in Marlins Park, 4-1, on Wednesday night.
The Marlins drew 41,237 for last year's home opener, then went on to finish last in the NL in attendance for the seventh consecutive year. ... Before the game, Guillen said Ramirez has a chance to be the NL MVP. ... The only no-hitter on Opening Day was thrown in 1940 by Hall of Famer Bob Feller for the Cleveland Indians against the Chicago White Sox. ... Lohse pitched five shutout innings in his only other Opening-Day start, which was in 2008.

How Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse beat the Marlins: - Got ahead: Lohse started 13 of the first 18 batters he faced with a first-pitch strike (72.2 percent), as he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Last season, Lohse led all qualified starters in first-pitch strike percentage (67.3 percent). - Marlins hitters were 0-8 in at-bats ending on pitches down or below the strike zone. Two of Lohse's three strikeouts and five of his seven swings-and-misses came on pitches down in the zone. - Lohse threw 22 sliders among his 90 pitches Wednesday (24.4 percent), his highest percentage in his last 14 starts, including the postseason. Lohse recorded six outs on his slider without allowing a hit, the first time he's done that since last May.
The Cardinals pitched a walk-free Opening Day game (though they did hit a batter). It was the first walk-free Opening Day game for Cardinals pitchers since 1974, when they beat the Pirates, 6-5 in 10 innings.
