DETROIT -- Last week, the Tampa Bay Rays rallied to win against Mariano Rivera.
On Wednesday, they beat Justin Verlander -- after the Detroit ace had looked untouchable for most of the afternoon."They are never going to give up," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "Say what you want about this team, but they play nine hard innings."More From ESPN.com
Only two starts into 2012, Justin Verlander is quickly learning that repeating 24 wins won't be easy, writes David Schoenfield. Blog

Research Notes
FROM ELIAS
It was a rare sort of defeat for Justin Verlander.
He's the first pitcher to do the following in nearly 23 years.
- Enter the 9th inning with his team leading
-Start and pitch at least 8 full innings
-Allow 0 runs and either no hits or one hit through those 8 innings
-Get the loss in the game
The last pitcher to meet all 4 of these criteria was Mark Langston of the 1989 Mariners. Langston took a 2-0 lead and a no-hitter into the 9th inning against the Blue Jays on May 10th of that season.
The Blue Jays scored 3 runs on 4 hits off Langston and Mike Schooler in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Mariners (and Langston, who got the loss), 3-2. |
