ST. LOUIS -- Even Pittsburgh third baseman Pedro Alvarez was starting to lose focus in the later stages of the Pirates' 6-3, 19-inning win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.
"I was getting a little stagnant out there," he said. "It's one of those things where it's mind over matter. You've just got to fight and keep that desire going."Alvarez played a big role in ending the marathon with his 23rd homer of the season. The drive broke a 3-3 tie as the Pirates won the longest game in the majors this season. It took 6 hours, 7 minutes to finish, trying the longest contest by time, matching a game between Baltimore and Boston on May 6.SweetSpot: 19 innings, no problem
Pedro Alvarez's game-winning home run highlights the difference for the Pirates between 2012 and 2011, writes Jack Moore. SweetSpot

Research Notes
From Elias: Jaime Garcia has now started 2 games that lasted at least 19 innings in the last 3 seasons. He also started the 20-inning game against the Mets
The last pitcher to start a pair of 19+ inning games in a 3-year period was Hall-of-Famer Bert Blyleven (1979 and 1980).
From Elias: Wandy Rodriguez snapped a personal 6-game losing streak with the win for the Pirates on Sunday.
Rodriguez is the first pitcher to break a personal single-season losing streak of 6 games or longer in a game that went at least 19 innings.
Since 2007 only 2 players have game-tying RBI in the 17th inning or later... and they are both Cardinals.
Coincidentally, Yadier Molina had the last one, in 2010, when he tied the game against the Mets in the 19th inning (the Cardinals lost in 20 innings).
Molina singled to lead off the 17th inning today, and was pinch run for by Ryan Jackson, who SCORED the tying run after the Pirates took the lead in the 17th.
David Freese is the 1st Cardinals player to go 0-8 or worse in a game since Luis Alicea in a 19-inning loss to Braves on May 14, 1988.
From Elias: Pedro Alvarez's HR in the 19th inning is the latest HR ever for a Pirates player.
Michael McKenry is the 1st Pirates player to go 0-8 or worse in a game since Johnny Ray in a 16-inning loss to Phillies on June 21, 1985.
From Elias: Pirates are 1st team to score 3+ runs in 19th inning or later since Expos at Astros on July 7, 1985 (3 in 19th). The last time Pirates scored 3+ runs in 19th inning or later was July 31, 1912 at Boston Braves (3 in 19th).
The last time the Pirates played a 19-inning game, it was last season where they lost to the Braves. The extra-inning defeat seemed to change Pittsburgh's fortunes the rest of the way, as they finished 19-42 following that loss to the Braves. [+]Pirates 19-Inning Games - Last 2 Seasons
