Yankees outfielder Raul Ibanez was the standout performer in Saturday's unlikely win against the A's, writes Johnette Howard. Story
Game notes
MLB made a scoring change that took a double away from Cano on Sept. 15 against Tampa Bay. Rays CF B.J. Upton will be charged with an error on Cano's ball in the eighth inning. ... A's OF Coco Crisp was out again with an eye allergy. Manager Bob Melvin says he is close but is not sure if Crisp will play this weekend. ... New York 1B Mark Teixeira (calf strain) took ground balls, did light jogging and took batting practice and will fly to Tampa, Fla., on Sunday to work out at the Yankees' complex. ... Jeter extended his hitting streak to a season-high 16 with a single in the sixth.

Conversely, it's only the second time the Yankees won after trailing by at least four runs in extra innings. The first instance happened almost 32 years ago to the day (Sept. 17, 1980 vs. Blue Jays). |
From Elias: The A's and Yankees combined for 4 HR in the 13th inning (OAK Gomes, Cespedes, Carter; NYY Ibanez).
This was the third time since 1969 (divisional era), that teams combined for 4+ HR in an extra inning.
Sept. 18, 2004 - Tigers at White Sox
(4 HR in 10th inning, 2 HR each for Tigers and White Sox)
May 16, 1969 - Seattle Pilots at Red Sox
(4 HR in 11th inning, 3 HR for Seattle and 1 HR for Boston) |
Jonny Gomes is first A's player to hit a go-ahead HR in 13th inning or later ON THE ROAD since Mark McGwire on July 4, 1988 at Cleveland. |
