LOS ANGELES -- With nothing at stake in the last game of the season, many teams' aces would take the day off. Not Clayton Kershaw.
The left-hander finished with a major league-leading 2.53 ERA, Adrian Gonzalez singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants 5-1 on Wednesday, a day after being eliminated from playoff contention for the third straight year by the NL West champions."He's as good as anybody in the game," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "He loves pitching."Kershaw Win ERA Title
The Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw shut down the Giants on Wednesday to secure the best ERA in the major leagues this season at 2.53.

Research Notes
From Elias: Marco Scutaro is the first player to enter the postseason on a 20-game hit streak since Philadelphia's Lonnie Smith in 1981 (23-gamer). |
Marco Scutaro singled in the top of the fourth inning Wednesday to extend his hitting streak to 20 games. He joins fellow Giants Pablo Sandoval (20 games) and Angel Pagan (20 games) to become the first trio of teammates with hitting streaks of at least 20 games in the same season since 2003, when both the Pirates (Kenny Lofton, Jason Kendall and Aramis Ramirez) and Blue Jays (Reed Johnson, Mike Bordick and Vernon Wells) accomplished the feat. |
