The cold reality of the Tigers' situation will dawn on Prince Fielder on Monday morning when he piles his sons into the car and chauffeurs them to school, then comes home with nothing special on his agenda, writes Jerry Crasnick. Story
Every World Series champ has stars, of course, and the Giants' biggest stars came up big in Game 4. But as much as any recent World Series champion, this feels like a team effort, writes David Schoenfield. Blog

Game notes
Detroit 2B Omar Infante broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch from Santiago Casilla in the ninth. ... Theriot and Laird had a nice reunion at the plate. They were St. Louis teammates last year when the Cardinals won the title. ... Laird started after Alex Avila was scratched. Avila's right arm was still sore after being hit by a foul tip in the opener. ... Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was at the game. ... Cabrera has reached base in all 24 of his postseason games with Detroit. ... Only two of the last nine World Series have gone longer than five games.SPONSORED HEADLINES

Research Notes
Sergio Romo's first strikeout in Game 4 came with his slider; to that point, all of Romo's strikeouts this postseason had been with his slider. His next two strikeouts were with his fastball, and his strikeout of Miguel Cabrera to end the series was Romo's first called strikeout of the postseason.
From Elias: Sergio Romo is the 2nd pitcher to strike out the side in the final inning of a clinching game of a World Series.
The other is the Yankees Joe Page in 1949.
All series long, the Tigers struggled against pitches Giants pitchers threw in the strike zone. After hitting .365 on such pitches in the ALCS, the Tigers hit just .175 on in-zone in the World Series, including .059 (1 for 17) on pitches down the middle. Their batting average on pitches out of the zone dropped only slightly, from .148 to .130. Compared with the ALCS, they swung at a higher percentage of pitches in the strike zone and a lower percentage of pitches out of the strike zone. Tim Lincecum has essentially been dropped from the Giants' postseason rotation, making just one start in his 6 postseason appearances this season. But he's been an incredible weapon -- he's gone at least 2 innings in all 5 of his relief appearances and he's pitched on 2 days' rest twice and 3 days' rest once.
It's often assumed that pitchers add some life to their fastball when they're able to air it out in shorter relief stints. But Lincecum has the same average fastball velocity. He's shown an improved changeup coming out of the bullpen, and he's done it by throwing it IN the strike zone more often. [+]Tim Lincecum This Season
