Outside the new Padres Hall of Fame, there is a wall of plaques dedicated to former players and coaches who have been enshrined in Cooperstown. On one side of the wall, there is a monument to the late Tony Gwynn; on the other, to Dave Winfield -- the first player to enter the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a Padre.

Red Sox manager John Farrell on his job security (or lack thereof): "My communication with Dave (Dombrowski) is very consistent. I think he's confident in my focus, and that is to win each and every day. That's where we stand."

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, who was ejected Thursday night for arguing after the Royals took a long time to ask for a replay review, said he discussed the issue with MLB official Joe Torre Friday and Torre said the league is looking into "cleaning up," the issue. What made it so frustrating for Matheny is that his team had vacated the field and begun to prepare to hit. The Royals had run off the field without arguing initially because, Matheny thought, they were embarrassed that Salvador Perez had stopped running on what looked like a sure double play. Matt Carpenter dropped the ball, but still nearly turned two.

Jake Arrieta in the Body Issue

"My flexibility is probably my No. 1 asset. Three years ago, the splits was something I told myself I was going to be able to do by the end of that offseason; it took me two years to actually do it." Able to be himself

From Jay Paris on-site in San Diego for Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran will be idle this weekend in San Diego. "He's improving," manager Joe Girardi said. "He's just not where he needs to be.'' Beltran's sore right hamstring had him out Friday against the San Diego Padres. He could be down the next two games, too. "I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't play,'' Girardi said. Beltran walked as a pinch-hitter in Thursday's win over the Rangers. He didn't play Wednesday, one day after getting hurt. "As I've said the last few days this was what worried me that he would have to play the field,'' Girardi said. "If he was DHing, it might be a little bit quicker. But we have to make sure he is OK.''
