Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez is headed to the 15-day DL with a hamstring strain. A-Rod, 40, is hitting .203 with five homers and 12 RBIs. He hurt the hamstring running to first base on Tuesday. In his place, the Yankees are calling up reliever James Pazos. Rodriguez is in the second to last season of his 10-year, $275 million contract. He is being paid $21 million this year and next.

He's getting overlooked due to Jake Arrieta's incredible start to the season but Jon Lester has been really good as well. After throwing 5.2 shutout innings on Wednesday against the Pirates his ERA is now 1.58. He artfully escaped a bases loaded no outs jam in the fourth and had another highlight reel play in the field throwing his entire glove with the ball in it to first base. He got the out.

How much trouble are the Yankees in? A lot! How many teams made the postseason after starting 8-16 or worse in their first 24 games? Only four - if you don't count strike years: The 1914 "Miracle" Braves, 1974 Pirates, 2001 A's and last year's Rangers.

'A' for effort

An Athletics fan puts his body on the line to dive after a foul ball, but it was all for naught as the fan in front of him makes a great leaping catch.

Jake Peavy continues to struggle for the Giants in a big way. In his last start, he lasted just two innings, the shortest of his career other than once leaving with an injury and once when he had an illness. The Reds hit three home runs off him in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead, with Peavy's ERA now over 9. It looks like time to insert Chris Heston into the rotation.
