5 things to watch for in free agency

With the salary cap going through the roof and most teams having money to burn, the NBA's silly season -- which starts Friday -- will not disappoint.

Alonzo Gee has declined his $1.4 million player option for next season, according to Sheridan Hoops' Mike Scotto, making him an unrestricted free agent. Gee averaged 4.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 22.4 minutes per game, including 38 starts, last season in New Orleans.

The Pelicans tendered Tim Frazier a qualifying offer, making him a restricted free agent. His QO is worth $1,180,431. Frazier, originally a 10-day pickup, averaged 13.1 points, 7.5 assists and 4.4 rebounds in 16 games for New Orleans and was signed for the remainder of the season.

Anderson is mixed free-agent bag

Ryan Anderson has gone from full-time NBA starter four years ago to starting only a dozen total games for the Pelicans during the last two seasons. Kevin Pelton sees declining skills and an injury history that will hurt Anderson's negotiating position, even though he's only 28. NBA's 25 best free agents (Insider)

Tre Demps, son of Pelicans GM Dell Demps, will play for the Chicago Bulls in summer league, his management firm, Priority Sports, announced. The younger Demps, an undrafted free agent, averaged 15.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists a game as a senior at Northwestern this past season.

Alvin Gentry on his relationship with Danny Ferry, who joined the Pelicans as a special adviser after two years away from the NBA: "It's fine, it's fine. I've known Danny a long time. Actually, he was kidding me because I watched him play in high school when he was at DeMatha [High School]. He's an extremely bright guy. He's here as a consultant and to challenge us with ideas, and things like that. I think he's done a great job with it."

Alvin Gentry seemed excited about the potential of second-round pick Cheick Diallo, a raw second-rounder. "He's an energy guy who plays extremely, extremely hard. I think he'll be a fan favorite. He'll do it in practice, he'll do it in the games, he's gonna play extremely hard and he's a guy that can get up and down the court." As far as his position? "I just think he's a basketball player."

Buddy Hield on what he brings to New Orleans: "Just a great teammate. A guy that can spread the floor for guys like Anthony. He's so special the way that he does things, the way he can play both ways, score the ball in a variety of ways -- pick-and-pop, face-up, post-up. So just spreading the floor and making life easier for Anthony on the court."
