Villanova sends Duke out before Elite Eight for fifth straight season
BOSTON -- No team has erased more chalk from the NCAA tournament than Villanova. The third-seeded Wildcats beat Duke for the first time in more than 50 years on Thursday night, getting 14 points and 11 rebounds from Dante Cunningham to win 77-54 and advance to the East regional final. It was Villanova's 14th NCAA victory over a higher-seeded team -- the most in tournament history.
Insider Intel: Pitt's problemPittsburgh's lackluster shooting won't cut it against surging Villanova in their Elite Eight matchup.
Katz: On Lock DownIt wasn't the offense that made the difference against Duke, it was Nova's defense that for the past two-plus games has been the best in the NCAA tournament, writes Andy Katz. Blog
• Duke was handed its worst tournament loss since a 30-point defeat to UNLV in the national title game.
• Duke again failed to beat a top-four seed in the NCAA tournament and hasn't beaten one since winning the national title in 2001. The Blue Devils also have not advanced past the Sweet 16 since 2004.
• Gerald Henderson and Jon Scheyer combined to shoot 4-for-32 from the field and totalled 20 points.
• Scottie Reynolds led Villanova with 15 points. The 54 points scored by Duke equals a tournament low for the Blue Devils in the shot-clock era.
