FRESNO, Calif. -- Bennie Rhodes scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Fresno State won its home opener by defeating Vanguard 74-42 on Wednesday night.
Cameron Nettles led Vanguard (1-1) with 10 points, while Alex Chapman collected 12 rebounds for the NAIA school.
Rhodes skied for an offensive rebound and putback just before the halftime buzzer to put Fresno State ahead 34-22. It was the Bulldogs' biggest lead to that point.
Fresno State shot 55.2 percent (32 of 58), compared to Vanguard's 25 percent (16 of 64).
Greg Smith and Ned Golubovic were the only players in Fresno State coach Steve Cleveland's nine-man rotation who saw regular minutes last season. The two big men combined for just six points.
Authorities say former Michigan State basketball player Keith Appling has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and other crimes.
Point guard Jaylen Fisher, who reopened his recruitment after coaching changes at UNLV, has committed to TCU over a long list of schools.
Forward Kennedy Meeks, who has averaged 9.4 points and 6.5 rebounds at North Carolina, has pulled out of the NBA draft and will return to the Tar Heels.
