MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- John Flowers scored a career-high 24 points to lead West Virginia to a 93-63 win over Providence Thursday night.
For Flowers, it was the first time he'd ever surpassed 20 points in a college game. Kevin Jones had a double-double, scoring 19 points with 13 rebounds while Casey Mitchell and Deniz Kilicli scored 14 apiece to help the Mountaineers (11-4, 3-2 Big East) dispatch the Friars (11-7, 0-5).Marshon Brooks led Providence in scoring with 13, despite that number being well off his season average of 23.8 points per game. Vincent Council also contributed 11 for the Friars.West Virginia dominated nearly every facet of the game, shooting 48.6 percent from the field (35 of 72) while holding Providence to just 31.2 percent (24 of 77).Once West Virginia regained the lead with 18:24 left in the first half, it never relinquished it. Also, from 13:28 in the first half to 6:36, the Mountaineers went on a 21-0 run.Providence scored only 20 points in the first half while shooting a meager 19.4 percent from the field (7 of 36).The Friars were also outrebounded by the Mountaineers, 52-47, although Providence did have the edge in offensive rebounds, 25-22.West Virginia went over 50 team rebounds, grabbing 52, for the first time since the Mountaineers played Pittsburgh last February.The victory marks West Virginia's seventh consecutive win over Providence, and its 11th in the last 12 meetings.
